United States, California, Los Angeles, RSABG; collected on the SE edge of Indian Hill Mesa (also observed in the Bernard Field Station to the E of the Botanic Garden). Annual herb 10 - 60 (90) cm tall with light-to medium-green leaves, sometimes taking on a purplish-red tinge in full sun; corolla dull burgundy-red. Robust specimens may look similar to Scrophularia californica, though differing in their inflorescence structure and annual habit. Apparently cultivated at RSABG in the 1950s by a graduate student studying Scrophularia, but subsequently escaping and becoming a weed here.
